The Cross/X — Krysset/X
October 30, 2021 – January 30, 2022
Cross/X — Krysset/X is a retrospective of installations 1979-2021 at The Cotton Factory (Bomuldsfabriken) Art Hall, Arendal, Norway
“The Cross/X — Krysset/X. Installations from 1979-2021” was on view alongside “The Red Eyed Dogs” marking forty years of Inghild Karlsen’s installation work. “Krysset/X” offered a retrospective journey back to her installation “Fugleskremsler” (Scarecrows) in 1997. She developed a distinct sculptural technique that gained attention with the Scarecrow installation.
Seen together, the two installations trace Karlsen’s evolving dialogue between material, landscape, and memory.
Inghild Karlsen is one of the leading representatives of the new trends that emerged in Norwegian art in the 1980s, inspired by movements such as Arte Povera, Land Art, and Post-Minimalism. Among other initiatives, she was one of the first artists to work with multimedia art forms and installations in Norway.
Karlsen has also been recognised for her early use of video as an art form. Her installations and performances often draw on specific cultural history, landscapes, and ways of life in the Arctic regions, both in Norway and internationally.
