Else Stockfish Drying Rack Installation close to Tromsø Airport, Langnes, Norway
Ingrid first worked on the Else Stockfish Drying Rack Installation in relation to the Lillehammer Winter Olympics. The idea was to bring it back to Tromsø.
The project was cancelled when the funding stopped. Later, it was built outside the Museum of Modern Art (MAM) in São Paulo during the 1994 Biennale.
The city of Tromsø invited Inghild Karlsen to install the Fish Rack for the city’s 200-year celebration. The city invited the Queen of Norway to the celebration.
The outdoor sculpture is eight metres (26.25 feet) high and 36 metres (119 feet) long. According to the artist, it’s not visible from a distance because it integrates well with its natural surroundings thanks to its open structure.
Karlsen is known for installations and sculptures that utilise materials and motifs native to the north, including traditional handicraft techniques, and has explored themes tied to the region’s traditional livelihoods. One of her notable artistic subjects is the fish rack—a structure deeply embedded in Northern Norwegian culture.
