The Catch Eyes project took place at the Pickled Art Gallery, located near international and national artist studios, known as Shangri-La in Beijing, China.
The “villages” around have a lot of people coming to Beijing for work. It is a poor district with no streetlights or asphalt except for the main road.
Inghild Karlsen’s idea about Catch Eyes in China relates to the reflection of light through reflective materials. She wanted to create an installation in the dark gallery room that focused on the people entering the room. Karlsen made these sculptures and some images on metal plates on the wall, as well as a table with stickers, pins, and bags.
She says it was amazing to hear the shock and joy of the people entering the room, carrying a little flashlight at eye level and being amazed by the intense light.
