Albino Dog Nord University
2002
Outside Nord University (Nord universitet), Levanger, Norway
In 2002, the modern Røstad campus was completed, featuring artwork by several Norwegian artists both inside and outdoors,
With nearly 2,000 students, Levanger is Nord University’s second-largest study location. The campus is in Røstad, and people in Norway often refer to the university as one of the most beautiful study locations in the country.
Inghild Karlsen’s albino dog Nord University in Levanger, cast in white concrete (marble-based concrete) with red eyes, is one of her signature sculptures and appears in several settings. She wants to challenge the audience’s senses. What are we seeing? What does this mean? What can we use this sculpture for? What is real? What can we learn? Such difficult questions. Albino dog symbolises the turmoil, despair and madness of the world, i.e. our times. “The dog’s red eyes speak of anger, pain, and protest, giving voice to the voiceless.”
