Column — Arctic Cultural Center

Column at the Arctic Cultural Center, Hammerfest, Norway
Inghild Karlsen’s column at the Arctic Culture Center stretches toward the ceiling with a majestic lightness, its vertical reach held in tension by a weighted, grounded form at the base.
The Arctic Culture Center is a multipurpose building with music and performing arts education, a workshop to meet the requirements of a professional theatre, rehearsal rooms for dance, and a movie theatre, all while remaining open and accessible to all kinds of visitors. The building serves as a central platform for cultural activities and conferences in the region. The centre emphasises the unique role Hammerfest has as the northernmost town in the world, north of the Arctic Circle, at 70.7 degrees north.
The project is part of a larger seafront development and is highly visible from both land and sea. The goal is to introduce new programs and architectural characteristics to the site, ensuring an attractive, beautiful town centre and contributing to the development and strengthening of the town’s identity.
«The Arctic Culture Centre establishes a link to the town and the sea in a clever way.», Lotte Sandberg/Aftenposten
