Earthworks

January 26 – April 7 2024
Bergen Kunsthall, Bergen, Norway

Earthworks is a thematic exhibition exploring the role of art in the history of ecological resistance. These movements in the Nordic countries happen at a time when ecological and environmental concerns are becoming increasingly pressing. The Earthworks project examines artistic work dealing with nature from a multitude of viewpoints. For instance, works by visual artists like Inghild Karlsen, writers and activists are showcased. These are individual works or collaborative works exploring the intersection of social justice and colonial conditions.

Nature is a crucial topic in Nordic art history, through landscape painting and stunning geographical features during the 19th century. Apart from the natural beauty, the precarity of nature has become an important topic for many artists since the 1960s, with concerns for the environment and the future of both nature and humans who depend on these resources.
Earth Works explores the relevance of nature in artistic debates, how we approach nature, how artists conceptualise art, and how they construct it.
Through the exhibition, Bergen Kunsthall (Art Hall) and the curators also want to focus on collaboration and community building, featuring talks, dinners, workshops, and performances that utilise the exhibition as a site for participation and a platform for multiple voices.

Curated by Axel Wieder and Silja Leifsdottir.
